Motivation

Following is the story of motivation. I tried to put that in words and my thoughts in the brackets.
Went to an NGO last Saturday accompanying with friends; I thought of motivating some of the students to learn further. As we were chatting with two of the pleasant and enthusiastic 50+ ladies from the NGO, one girl came down and sat quietly with her school-bag. As we approached the end of our conversation, one of the ladies called her and asked to join us. She was one of the beneficiaries in the NGO.
That turned the table and I tumbled from top of the hill just like Jill - Jack's friend. Here I would like to mention that I am an Electronics Engg, a PG diploma holder in Digital design and software professional. This is just to underline my stupidity some 10 years back. (I remained quite a stupid after that as well.) The following conversation forced me to think that why I did my engineering!

Aarti (the girl with school bag): (As she explained her background) My mother works in mumbai as a full time (24x7) house maid. I don't know where my father is since he left the house. My brother and I learn in Pune. I am pursuing 2nd year Diploma in EnTC.

We: Would you like to continue the studies to get a degree?

Aarti: Yes, I will start working and do the degree as part time.

We: How? You need to attend the classes as you do now.

Aarti: Wadia College offers the part time degree courses; I enquired it when I joined the diploma course. (Really, I didn't know that)

We: And would your mother support that or would she ask you to get married?

Aarti: I'm very lucky; she asked me to concentrate on studies and get the degree. But I need to work after the diploma and support my grandpa-mother's father- as well, who supported us in our bad times. Still the conditions are not so good. Marriage is quite a long way though.

We: Why did you choose EnTC and not any other thing?

Aarti: When I was in school I loved computers, I loved to work on them for hours so my teacher insisted me to go for the further studies in computers. But then I found out that there is something (hardware) inside computer which runs it and then computers/software also have the better opportunities in bigger companies (kind of limiting the scope) but EnTC will offer me bigger area to work. (I didn't know this till I passed my degree examinations.)

We: How do you study?

Aarti: After freshening up I start my studies round about 7 and sits till 11pm with only dinner break (daily!!!)

We: How do cope up with English (as we understood that she was not very comfortable with English speaking; I wasn't either)

Aarti: Keep the dictionary with me to understand the typically technical and difficult words. Translate the topic in Marathi while reading and put on the notebook in English in my own words. (WOW, who does that?)

We: Have you studied Millman Halkias book on basic electronics?

Aarti: No, I have seen that in library though. (I am still unaware of how it looks like..)

That continued for a while..

I left the premises with some surprised expressions on my face. But was very clear about who needs more motivation.

World T20

It's sad to miss any sort of news from first ever women's T20 world cup. I don't know what drives media to showcase men's indian cricket team for WI tour as BREAKING NEWS against women's team making it to the semifinals of the world cup.

I was disappointed to know that 50 over women's world cup final didn't happen on SCG though it was in Sydney. I saw some of the matches and those were entertaining. Now as ICC made a step forward to promote women's cricket by arranging semis and final on the same day and same venue as men's matches, I think it's media's turn to promote not only women's cricket but women's events overall.

Came across just one line in today's newspapers about Saina getting to next round in Jakarta open and there are 2 full pages on what Dhoni said after losing all three matches in super 8.
This gets to more general question that why don't we focus on success stories rather than just putting anything on screen or paper regarding Indian cricket or Ajmaj Kasab (Once there was a breaking news that Kasab didn't show any emotions in court)?

Looking forward to see Jhulan's girls making news with Anjum, Amita and Mithali joining the party.

The Ride

It was Friday evening. Nashik to Kasara by bus takes (generally) 1 and half hrs. It was already late. We had to reach Kasara in 1 hr and 15 mins to catch the other train.

I remembered the Taxi driver in "Jab We Met" as I saw the bus driver. Passengers were very eager and shouting to start early and this guy was doing his rituals as cleaning the glass, feeling the water bottle etc. The poor conductor was victim of good and very good words from us; driver was in his own world.

At last we started at 6.40 just an hour in hand. And...
When driver made his first turn out of the bus stand, i knew that either we will reach in time or we won't reach at all. You guessed it right. It was a roller coaster ride down the Kasara ghaat. We all first asked driver to slow down and then (as I said he was is in his world) started to pray. Somebody started with Ramraksha, some with Maruti Stotr, and rest of us with just Hey Ram.

But as I am typing this to tell you the story, driver made it half an hour early to Kasara to give us ample time to not only buy our tickets but have a Vada Pav as well. ;-)
